The Vanishing of Goliath

A village fete on a rainy day

The briefing

You arrive at the sodden fete with the vicar fretting at the gate and the organisers huddled under dripping canvas. Three people had the run of the grounds when the lights failed, and the village wants answers before the judging resumes.

Goliath, the forty-pound prize marrow tipped to win Best in Show, was found gone from its display plinth at half past two. Only the rumpled velvet cloth remained, and the judges were due to arrive any minute.

The suspects

  • Hector Bellamy, Tombola steward
  • Marigold Pryce, Rival marrow grower
  • Winifred Ashdown, Parish clerk
